Kashmiri leader attacked by hindu extremists

Publication time: 25 June 2007, 12:17

In their continuing attacks on Hurriyat leadership in recent past, Hindu extremist group, Shiv Sena activists physically manhandled the Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement (JKSM), Zafar Akbar Butt, which is affiliated to the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, after he refused to yell ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai'.

Around 35 to 40 Sena activists led by Anan Sharma stormed into the Jammu Press Club, where Butt was scheduled to address a press conference. The activists disrupted the event and physically manhandled the JKSM chief, who later fell unconscious.

"Shiv Sena activists forced Butt to say ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai' which he refused. The Sena activists then started thrashing him and was left unconscious", associates of Butt said. "I can say Jai Jammu and Kashmir or Naar-e-Takbeer but not Jai Bharat", Zaffar shouted at the Sena activists, according to the Zaffar's colleagues. The associates of Butt who tried to stop Sena activists were also attacked. The Sena activists also damaged mike and furniture of the hall.

The Hurriyat activists blasted the local police of abetting Shiv Sena activists in assault saying they had entered the hall with a plot. "Police didn't reach the spot and not taking any action against them (Shiv sena activists), shows that the assault was pre-planed", they said. This is the sixth attack by the Sena activists on the Hurriyat leaders in the recent past.

Terming attack on Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement chief as worst kind of Indian state-terrorism, APHC spokesman, in a statement in Srinagar, pointed out that such attacks were carried out at the behest of the occupation authorities.

"We condemn such worst kinds of terrorist acts in strongest words", the Hurriyat spokesman said. "These acts are done under planned conspiracy", he said, adding, "leadership from Kashmir, may it be Yasin Sahib, Gilani Sahib or Mirwaiz, have been attacked by the Shiv Sainiks but no action is imitated against them. Had any pro-Indian leader assaulted, PSA would have imposed against us".
